7 Easy Steps To Grow Cabai Kulai From Seeds

Cabai Kulai is a popular chilli type used to spice up food in Malaysia. This type of chillies can be grown outdoors in sandy, acidic soil.

They are perennial, but their harvest can be reduced on the second year, and that’s why they are often replanted.

Here are seven easy steps to grow cabai kulai from seeds.

1. Location

Because Malaysia is a tropical country, you should grow your chillies outside. But you can also grow them in a container, where you can move them indoors and outdoors according to the heat.

Keep in mind that if you plan to plant them in a container, you should choose a pot with drainage holes. To irrigate the soil well, it is a good idea to place a shallow dish below the pot.

2. Plant Seeds

Remember to plant cabai kulai seeds when the temperature is between 24 to 29 degrees Celsius, they germinate best at a constant heat.

3. Soil

You should add compost if you are planning to plant your vegetable seeds outside.

The soil should be slightly acidic. If the soil is not acidic enough, add some aluminium sulphate to increase it.

Also as I mentioned before, chilli plants love sunlight, so you need to choose a place that gets at least 8 hours of sun per day.

Once you choose the location, dig small holes approximately 0.6m apart to plant your seedlings. For the roots to spread out, the hole should be wider than its depth. Don’t compact the soil by pushing it down.

4. Water

Irrigate the soil well with water. To know when to water the chilli plants, check the top inch of the soil if it is dry. If it’s so, do it. If you are watering in a pot, stop until water starts to come out of the saucer at the bottom.

5. Weed

Always weed your chilli plants regularly. To avoid weeds and keep moisture in the soil, simply place mulch around them.

6. Sun

You should place your cabai kulai plants outdoors during the day when it is over 16 degrees Celsius. If you are growing them inside, place them in a sunny window. Make sure they are getting at least 8 hours of sunlight per day.

If you have any way to increase the temperature, do it, because they will produce more fruits this way.

7. Harvest

When the cabai kulai plants mature to between 7.6 to 15.2 centimetres long, cut the stems.

It’s better to do it this way than picking the chilli themselves. Cabai Kulai usually develop between 70 and 80 days after germination.

The best thing about cabai kulai is that you can buy them from vegetable seeds online store, such as Soon Huat Seeds, and grow them very easily.

This type of chilli is high in vitamin A and contains vitamins B6, E, & C. It also has riboflavin, potassium and manganese, and has long been used as a herbal supplement.

What are some vegetable gardening tips and hacks that will help you plant your seeds better?

  • Soak your vegetable seeds in a glass of water overnight.
  • Fill your pots up to 1.3 centimetres from the top of the back with cabai kulai seeds. You can place 3 or 4 seeds in each pot. Space them evenly.
  • The soil should be moist. With plastic wrap, cover the pot. To germinate, place them on a sunny window. For 1 to 6 weeks dampen the soil when needed.
  • Over the next few weeks, you will have to thin your seedlings. The first thing you need to do is snip off the weakest seedling just when it gets its first leaves.
  • When they form 2 sets of leaves, you should cut off all but 1 seedling. This seedling should be ready to plant.

    Happy planting!
