Growing plants from seeds is a lot of fun. You and your children will be fascinated to witness seed germination; watching seeds flowering and bear fruits.

In this post, we’ll be giving you vegetable tips and hacks for beginners on how to germinate seeds, so keep reading, and you’ll be all ready to start.

Guide on How to Germinate Seeds

1. Start Small

It’s easy to grow from seeds to harvest, all you need is the right light and some simple tools.

But keep in mind that each plant has unique seed-starting requirements, so keep it simple, start only with a few varieties.

Vegetable seeds, such as amaranth or lettuce, are straightforward to start.

 2. Right Time

It’s essential to have your seedlings ready for outdoor sun when the weather is favorable.

Read the vegetable seed packet to find out the germination temperature and if they require full sun.

3. Containers

You can start seeds in a container that is at least 20-30cm deep with drainage holes.

If possible, start with trays that are made especially for seed starting as they are portable.

4. Prepare the Soil

Choose soil that’s made for growing vegetable seeds like peat moss for a disease-free and healthy start. It’s not a good idea to use land from your garden or reuse potting soil from your house plants.

Wet the mix before you fill the containers, and make sure you pack the soil firmly to eliminate gaps.

Also, you need to add liquid fertilizer a few weeks after they germinate and keep doing this until you transplant your vegetable seeds into the garden.

5. Plant

When you buy your vegetable seeds online or from the store, suggest reading the instructions on the best way you should plant your seeds.

Some of the small ones can be planted right on the soil surface, but larger seeds will need to be buried.

Remember you will need to moisten the newly planted seeds.

If you want to speed germination, you can cover the pots with plastic wrap, this helps keep the seeds moist before they germinate.

But don’t forget, when you see the first signs of green, remove the cover.

6. Water

As the seedlings grow, keep the soil moist but not soggy. You can let the soil dry slightly between waterings.

Also don’t forget to feed the seedlings regularly with liquid fertilizer, and always check the package to learn the recommended rate for the mix.

 7. Light

Seedlings need approximately 15 hours of sun a day, but they also need darkness, to rest.

If you are growing the seed in a window, make sure they are facing south and rotate the pots regularly to prevent plants from leaning into the light.

Light will keep seedlings healthy. You can also use lights, just make sure to adjust them a few inches above the tops of the seedlings.

8. Move Them to the Garden

Vegetable seeds need a gradual transition to the outdoors.

You can do this by placing them in a protected spot outdoors for a week or 10 days and exposing them to more and more sunshine and wind every day until they finally adapt.

Vegetable Garden Care and Maintenance Tips

Here are some tips to take care of your vegetable garden:

• Water regularly.
• Water the root of the plant. If you water the entire plant, you are leaving room for diseases to happen.
• Pull weeds from your garden at least once a week.
• You should fertilize as much as your vegetable seeds need.
• Check your plants at least once a week to be ahead of pests and diseases.
• Make rotating your crops a priority.
