Pumpkin Plant Pests You Need to Look Out For

The pumpkin plant belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae family, and it’s usually grown as a vegetable. Unfortunately, growing pumpkins can be challenging, especially if you aim to grow a giant.

Giant pumpkins have a long growing period, and they can encounter pumpkin insect pests. That’s why it’s essential to learn how to control insects and pests.

Pumpkin seeds are typically grown as annuals and the vines can reach up to 15 meters in length. The most common types of pumpkin plants are orange, but you can also find green, grey, yellow, or red.

This plant is very popular in Malaysia as they are a delicious ingredient in multiple dishes such as pies, soups, and bread. It’s possible to mash pumpkin to enjoy it like potatoes.

If you love nutritious and spectacular vegetables, you can successfully grow pumpkin seeds in your vegetable garden. In this guide, we’ll share some useful tips on how to control pumpkin plant pests, so you can enjoy this plant all year round.

How To Grow Pumpkins

Pumpkin plants are a warm-season crop, demanding lots of sunshine and good drainage. In Malaysia, you can grow this plant almost all year round as it requires temperatures between 18 and 25° Celsius.

Although pumpkins can grow in all types of soil, the best yields are produced in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Make sure to plant pumpkin seeds in an area full of the sun because of their fragile root system.

Keep in mind that some vining varieties can grow very big, so it’s essential to grow them in a big space. If you don’t have enough space, select smaller bush varieties.

Pumpkin seeds can be direct-seeded or sown indoors and transplanted. Expert gardeners recommend sowing one or two seeds approximately 2cm deep, at a minimum of 90cm apart if growing bush varieties, and 135cm apart if growing vining species.

Make sure to water profoundly once a week if you’re not using a drip irrigation system. Gardeners use mulches to keep the soil moist. Usually, most seeds germinate in 7 to 10 days.

Pumpkins are commonly harvested by hand once the fruit is matured. You will know the fruit is ripe once the color changes uniformly and it becomes hard. Carefully cut the stem of the fruit with a knife.

Insect Problems

As mentioned, pumpkins can suffer from insect and pest issues. Fortunately, these issues can be treated and prevented as well. Here are some of the most prevalent bugs on pumpkins and how to stop them.

aphids

1. Aphids

Aphids are pests on pumpkins that are usually harmless except when they come in large quantities. When this occurs, leaves turn yellow and produce a viscous substance known as honeydew.

Please note that aphids are responsible for spreading diseases among pumpkins.

To control aphids, you can use:

  • Insecticides
  • Spray of water
  • Introduction of natural predators such as ladybugs
  • Mulch

beetles

2. Beetles

Beetles are usually the most common type of pest on pumpkins. Fortunately, they’re easy to control. Just apply a mild pesticide, and they should be killed.

3. Squash Bugs

Squash bugs are dangerous pests that can kill stems and leaves. Expert gardeners recommend the use of insecticides to control these nasty bugs.

snail

4. Snails and Slugs

Snails and slugs usually appear on giant pumpkins where the flesh is still tender. You can prevent snails and slugs by putting a circle of salt or sand around pumpkins.

Please note that once the skin is hard, this pest can’t puncture your pumpkin, so it won’t be an issue anymore.

vine borers

5. Vine Borers

Vine borers are insects that can lead to severe pumpkin issues. This pest penetrates profoundly into pumpkin vines and removes moisture.

If you have this problem, you can still save your vine by uncovering the bug and planting the contaminated part of the vine in the ground.

Please note that vine borers are dangerous and it’s possible to lose all your harvest. We recommend spraying the vines with a pesticide to prevent vine borers.

The Bottom Line

Pumpkins are delicious and nutritious vegetables that you can grow all year round in Malaysia. The best way to prevent and control pests and insects is by applying insecticides and pesticides to your pumpkin plants.

Don’t forget to grow your pumpkins in a place full of sunshine and to water deeply once a week.
