What Type of Soil, and Fertilizers do Papaya Trees Need

In tropical countries, such as Malaysia, papaya is widely cultivated, and right now it is one of the fastest-growing fruits in the country.

Papayas are tasty and nutritious, they contain a type of digestive enzyme called Papine, which increases digestion and refreshes the liver. It is also rich in vitamins A, B, and C, calcium, and iron.

Papayas help to treat worm infections, ulcers, skin lesions, kidneys, and cancer.

The best thing is that it is easy to grow papayas from seeds, so you can enjoy this delicious fruit all year long.

Growing Papayas From Seeds

Growing papayas from seeds is easy, and every tropical food garden usually has several papaya trees. All they need is warm weather, sunlight, water, and soil.

Papaya trees are fast-growing, single-stem plants. Papayas don’t have branches, and the trunk is soft and lacks a bark.

If you have never seen a papaya tree before, it is a bit like a palm tree. It is a tall trunk with leaves at the top.

You need to consider that the papaya fruit grows on the trunk, but as the tree continues to grow, it is harder to get the plant as it gets older. That’s why it is important to have young trees.

Weather and Soil

The papaya is a tropical plant, and it requires hot, steady weather for the crop cycle. The success or failure of the plant and its fruit production is determined by the air, and soil temperatures.

Papaya trees do not like cold and wet soil. It is very important to have a good drainage system to avoid root rot, which is the most common problem when growing papayas.

How to grow papaya seeds?

First, you need to prepare the seedling tray.

Fill in three parts of compost mixed with two parts of red sandy soil, and one part of fertilizer. Mix them well.

Next, place two papaya seeds per hole, and sprinkle water to keep the soil moist. Once the papaya seeds germinate, 8 to 14 days later, it is time to transplant it into well-drained sandy loam soil. Papayas grow well in sandy soils with a pH of 4.5 – 8.0.

It is important to keep a distance between the plants of 2 rows 8 feet.

Fertilizers

Papaya trees are relatively low maintenance, but this doesn’t mean they don’t require proper fertilizers to grow fast and for optimal development of the fruit.

The recommended fertilizer after 7 days is 100 grams; 14 days after sowing is 50 grams.

For proper root establishment and growth, newly planted papayas need phosphorus. Thus it is a good idea to apply fertilizer before planting a papaya tree.

Compost

To feed papaya trees directly with important nutrients, including nitrogen, it is a good idea to use compost. Compost helps improve drainage and creates the perfect soil conditions for papaya trees.

With the fertilizer, add 2 parts of compost at the bottom before planting your papaya tree.

You should apply a regular fertilizer to help support proper papaya tree growth and fruit development.

Remember to always water your papaya tree immediately after applying the fertilizer. This helps to carry the nutrients down to the papaya tree roots, which in turn also prevents, and decreases the risk of a nitrogen burn.

Summary

Buy your papaya seeds and prepare them by placing the seeds in a glass of water and soaking them at room temperature for a day. Then prepare the seedling tray.

Fill in three parts of compost with two parts of red sandy soil and one part of fertilizer. Mix them well. Do the same combination in the spot where you are going to transplant the germinated seeds.

After 250 days, it is time to harvest and enjoy this delicious and nutritious fruit.

Happy planting!
