Growing Kacang Panjang
Plow your land and add new soil if necessary, then make beds with width of 120-150 cm and the distance between beds of 60 cm.
Sprinkle manure with compost at 20 ton/Ha. If the soil pH is too low (acidic) add lime to raise the soil pH.
Install black/silver mulch in order to cover the bed surface from weeds.
Make planting holes with a distance of 80 cm between rows and 30 cm between holes on the soil bed.
Cultivation
Place 2 seeds into each holes around 3 – 4 cm deep. Then fill the holes with a thin layer of compost or peat moss. Prepare for propagation when plants reach 20 to 25 cm.
Fertilization
Fertilization is done twice, the first time of planting , apply as much as 30 kg/ha of Nitrogen (N), 240 kg/ha of Phosphorus (P) and 80 kg/ha of Potassium (K).
Maintaining
When trellis are being installed, height of 180 cm to 200 cm is marked as a top for the vines to encourage side vines and prevent collapsing when exposed to wind. Guide the vines upwards by circling the vines around your installed strings on trellis. Soil is always kept moist to ensure continuous growth of the plant to fruit setting.
Pests
Normally Aphids ( Aphis spp.), Red mite (Tetranychus bimaculatus), Pod borer (Maruca testulalis) are often found attacking long bean plants. They can be controlled using chemicals with active ingredient such as: cyhalothrin, deltamethrin, profenofos, beta-cyfluthrin every 10 days. If the condition deteriorates, the rate can be increased to every 3 days.
Harvest
Long beans can be harvested from the age of 38-40 days after planting. Harvesting can be done every other day or every day. Yields are usually tied to the size of a small circle of thumb and forefinger. Combined with other bunches to be transported to the fresh market.
