Life would be dull without some pumpkin pies and pumpkin spice latte. Even Halloween is not Halloween without a pumpkin, right?

The pumpkin is technically a fruit but it is also considered a vegetable in some regions. For gardeners and farmers, planting pumpkins is a good choice as it does not require a lot of hard work. All it requires is a little care and a lot of sunlight.

In this post, we are pleased to discuss in detail the things to know before growing pumpkins

Basic Things to Know Before Growing Pumpkins

  • You can plant pumpkins all year round in Malaysia
  • Pick the right type of pumpkin seeds. You can get them online
  • Plant the seeds at the right time and place
  • Give the seedlings love and care
  • Wait for your pumpkins to bloom
  • Harvest

1. Pick the Pumpkin Seeds

Mother nature provides not just 10 or 20 but hundreds of different types of pumpkins. First and foremost, pick the pumpkin seeds you want to grow. You can find pumpkin seeds easily online or at the store.

Once you have chosen the right seeds, you have to choose the right time to transfer them into the soil.

2. Planting

Planting pumpkin seeds requires care and vigilance. Although pumpkins are not the hardest vegetable to grow they do require some care. Plant the seeds directly in the soil at the right time.

The best time to plant pumpkin seeds is in June, July and August (the hottest months in Malaysia). Pumpkin seeds love warm soil so it is important to find a full sun spot to plant them.

3. The Ideal Temperature for Pumpkin Seeds

To start planting, wait for the soil temperature to reach up to 35 degrees C. Pumpkin seeds in such temperature thrive optimally. Seeds die in cold soil so it’s best to wait for the soil to reach the optimum temperature.

4. Planting Sites Matter

As the right time comes and you have picked the pumpkin seeds, you need to pick the site to plant the seeds. Go for the garden spot that receives the most sunlight.

Pumpkins flourish vigorously if they receive maximum sunlight. Assign a spacious spot to them as they can grow into a giant vegetable with big leaves. This doesn’t apply if you are growing tiny pumpkins.

5. Planting Methods

  • The best way to plant the pumpkin seeds is to make pumpkin hills. For beginners, a pumpkin hill refers to mud dunes slightly raised that proves ideal for the seeds. The reason you should do that is these pumpkin hills allow for speedy germination of the seed because they get warmer quickly.
  • Prior to that, the mud mounds should be ready for planting. It is necessary to fertilize the mud with either manure or compost. This fertilization will provide all the necessary nutrients for the seeds to germinate and thrive.
  • The pumpkin hills should be at least 4 to 6 feet apart so they can have a lot of room to spread. The seeds need to be dug up to 1 inch deep in the hill; one hill can easily accommodate 3 to 4 pumpkin seeds.
  • Leave the seeds for germination and keep a check on the soil where you have planted the pumpkins. Make sure you clean the soil regularly by removing the unwanted plant growth. The seeds should germinate and start to spread in about a week or two. Keep trimming the leaves when the need arises.

6. Care and Watering

Care is necessary if you want to grow quality pumpkins. Pumpkins require a lot of watering. The ideal frequency is once a week. Make sure you water the soil deeply up to one inch.

You should make sure you don’t overwater them on rainy days. Besides, keep mulching the soil so that the soil layer is protected. Lastly, take the necessary steps to prevent the risks of pest infestation and plant diseases.

7. Harvest

After the pumpkins have reached the desired colour, size, and maturity, it’s time to harvest them. Generally, pumpkins take up to 70-80 days to reach full maturity. To know more about the signs of a ripened pumpkin, please check out our post ‘How to Harvest Pumpkins’.

After harvest and curing, it’s time to enjoy the wonder of pumpkins such as pumpkin soups, spice latte, desserts, and whatnot for the hard work and dedication you have invested.
